You'll work with students presenting diverse communication needs while utilizing best practices in educational interpreting to facilitate meaningful participation in all aspects of their educational experience.
Your primary responsibilities include providing simultaneous and consecutive interpreting services during academic instruction, facilitating communication between deaf and hard of hearing students and hearing members of the educational community, and supporting student participation in all school activities including special events, assemblies, and extracurricular programs. You'll prepare subject-specific vocabulary and terminology, collaborate with teachers to ensure optimal interpreting conditions, and advocate for student communication access needs.
Additional duties encompass interpreting during parent conferences, IEP meetings, and educational evaluations, maintaining professional interpreter boundaries while supporting student advocacy, participating in team meetings to discuss student progress and needs, and documenting interpreting services provided. You'll also coordinate with deaf and hard of hearing education specialists, participate in professional development activities, and contribute to creating inclusive educational environments for all students.
Applicants must possess a minimum 3.5 EIPA score along with 2 years of verified interpreting experience in educational settings. Fluency in American Sign Language and English is required, with demonstrated competency in educational interpreting techniques, professional ethics, and classroom dynamics understanding.
Required qualifications include knowledge of deaf culture and educational practices for deaf and hard of hearing students, ability to interpret across various academic subjects and grade levels, understanding of special education processes and legal requirements, and strong interpersonal skills for working with diverse educational teams. Flexibility in work assignments and comfort with various interpreting environments are essential for success in this position.
We highly value candidates with 4.0 EIPA scores, Written EIPA certification, and RID/NIC certification including written test completion. Additional preferences include experience with multiple sign language systems, background in assistive technology applications, and familiarity with inclusive education approaches.
